2013 Napa Valley Merlot

Tasting Notes

2013 Wine Spots Napa Valley Merlot is an elegant wine. Sweet cherry and plum aromas are accented by hints of vanilla, fine herbs and aged leather. French oak aging in small barrels emphasizes the fruit flavors of cherry, plum and blackberries and adds hints of toasty oak. This is a classic example of Napa Merlot with supple tannins and a lingering finish.

Vintage Notes

The 2013 vintage can best be described as “early, even, and excellent”. A warm, dry spring led to early bud break and canopy vigor, creating ideal conditions for flower and fruit set. Consistent summer temperatures and low rainfall allowed the fruit to achieve optimal ripeness. An early but long harvest with almost no rains provided ideal hang time, allowing the grapes could be picked at optimal ripeness, with complex, concentrated flavors.

Winemaking Notes

Harvest occurred at the beginning of September through October, allowing the grapes to develop deep fruit intensity. The grapes were stainless steel fermented and received extended skin contact before being transferred to barrels. The wine was aged in small French oak barrels and underwent malolactic fermentation and then racked prior to bottling.

"Bright medium garnet black color. Bright, savory, creamy aromas of berry creme brulee, pickled tomatoes, and roasted nuts with a soft, tangy, dryish medium-to-full body and a warming, involved, medium-length wet slate and dried sour cherries finish with well integrated tannins and moderate oak. A nicely balanced merlot that has a dry, minerally Old World character."
